Angler who pioneered saltwater flyfishing in Baja, founder of “Friends of Fishing” for disadvantaged youth – 2008
Gary Graham is a skilled saltwater angler who has been a presence on the West Coast Fishing scene since the mid-seventies when he had Don Blackman build the first in a series of “Water Closets” – a 21’ Blackman skiff. As he moved through a series of boats to the last “Water Closet”, a 42’ Uniflyte, Gary and his fishing crew were a force to be dealt with, racking up many light tackle trophies. His achievements also included a number of IGFA world records.
Gary was named one of the Top 10 Anglers in 1987 by a national magazine, and that same year, was also named Angler of the Year by the National Coalition of Marine Conservation, Pacific Region. He was named Tuna Club Angler of the Year in 1990, and was appointed IGFA Baja Representative in the mid-90s. With his wife, Yvonne, he founded Friends of Fishing, a nonprofit organization designed to take disadvantaged children enrolled in Big Brothers and Big Sisters of San Diego County fishing.
In the mid-eighties, Graham, a native of San Diego, was one of the first to begin seriously fishing the East Cape beaches and by the early nineties had focused on using a fly rod exclusively. Since 1993, Gary and his wife, Yvonne, (IGFA Rep for Southern California) have owned “Baja on the Fly,” a fly-fishing expedition company in Baja California, Mexico. Along with their guides, they’ve hosted in excess of 3,000 fly-fishing clients in the “East Cape” area and other areas of Baja. Gary is a Federation of Fly Fishers (FFF) certified fly casting instructor.
Graham has written two books about Fly Fishing in Baja, the No Nonsense Guide to Southern Baja, which is in its second printing, and the No Nonsense Guide to Fly Fishing Magdalena Bay. He has written – and been featured in – many columns and articles in major sport fishing magazines and newspapers. Additionally, Graham has appeared in many sportfishing related television, radio and video productions.
Gary has served on the Board of Directors of Outdoor Writers of California and served as president of that organization for three consecutive years. At present, he is a member of the Outdoor Writers Association of America, a lifetime member of The Marlin Club of San Diego, and a member of The Tuna Club of Avalon.
Gary and Yvonne are owners of GRAHAM COMMUNICATIONS, a marketing firm providing consulting, promotions, advertising, media planning, public relations and corporate identity for a variety of clients.
