Members of the California Outdoors Hall of Fame (Hall) are accomplished outdoorsmen and women who have dedicated themselves to advancing the understanding of, appreciation for, and conservation of California’s great outdoors. Anyone may nominate a candidate for the Hall, including candidates themselves.

Process:

Nomination forms for all candidates are reviewed by the Hall’s Executive Committee in December. The Executive Committee determines whether they believe the nominations meet the criteria (not all nominees make it past this step).

Ballots with cleared candidates are then sent to Electors, comprised of previous inductees (Circle of Chiefs) and California leaders in outdoors media, government and industry. These Electors determine which candidates are deserving of induction to the California Outdoors Hall of Fame.

Campaigning a candidate's induction is not advised. A candidate should stand on his/her merits as an outdoorsman or woman who inspired thousands of Californians and whose adventures and/or conservation efforts had a paramount impact.

Those selected for induction and the nominator are notified in early January. Unsuccessful candidates are not immediately notified, but nominators of unsuccessful candidates will eventually be given a brief description of why the nomination failed. Failed nominations may be resubmitted. Past experience shows several inductees were revised and resubmitted following an unsuccessful nomination.

The induction ceremony typically occurs at the International Sportsmen's Exposition in Sacramento in January of the coming year.
